A new study ranking the cleanest and dirtiest lakes in the U.S. places three Oklahoma lakes among the top 10 dirtiest lakes in the country.

The study analyzed chemical data from the National Water Quality Monitoring Council for 276 US lakes. To determine a lake's cleanliness, researchers measured dissolved oxygen, ammonia, lead, phosphorus, sulfate, total dissolved solids, turbidity and pH.

No. 4: Waurika Lake

Lake.com ranked Waurika Lake in southwestern Oklahoma as the fourth dirtiest lake in the country.

Regarding chemicals in Waurika Lake, researchers reported these findings:

  • Ammonia: 0.133 milligrams per liter

  • Dissolved oxygen: 7.59 milligrams per liter

  • Lead: Not reported

  • pH: 8.29 milligrams per liter

  • Phosphorus: 0.108 milligrams per liter

  • Sulfate: 131 milligrams per liter

  • Total dissolvable solids: 387.73 milligrams per liter

  • Turbidity: 37.96 milligrams per liter

No. 5: Dave Boyer (Walters) Lake

Also in southwestern Oklahoma, Lake.com ranked Dave Boyer Lake as the fifth dirtiest lake in the country.

  • Dissolved oxygen: 8.23 milligrams per liter

  • Lead: Not reported

  • pH: 8.31 milligrams per liter

  • Phosphorus: 0.199 milligrams per liter

  • Sulfate: 56.33 milligrams per liter

  • Total dissolvable solids: 338.5 milligrams per liter

  • Turbidity: 113.15 milligrams per liter

No. 8: Lake Ellsworth

Near Lawton in southwestern Oklahoma, Lake.com named Lake Ellsworth as the eighth dirtiest lake in the country.
