One dead, two seriously injured in I-70 wreck near Junction City
Update 7:19 p.m.: The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) has released the narrative of the fatal crash near Junction City Monday afternoon.
According to the KHP crash log, a Toyota Tacoma was driving west on I-70 near milepost 298 and a Ford Bronco Sport was driving east. The Tacoma blew its front driver-side tire and veered into the eastbound lane, and struck the Bronco Sport head-on.
The driver of the Tacoma was identified by KHP as 72-year-old Robert Cleveland, of Junction City. Cleveland sustained fatal injuries in the incident and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Bronco Sport had a driver and passenger in the vehicle. Both individuals were wearing seatbelts and sustained suspected serious injuries. The driver was taken to a Topeka hospital, while the passenger went to a Junction City hospital.
Update 5:46 p.m.: According to KanDrive.gov, both directions of I-70 traffic are open. The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) said on social media a Trooper responded to a two-vehicle head-on crash in the construction zone near mile marker 298 on I-70 in Geary County.
Update 4:40 p.m.: The Geary County Sheriff’s Office announced on social media that there is a fatality relating to this incident. Traffic in the area is being rerouted for the time being.
GEARY COUNTY (KSNT) – A wreck on I-70 near Junction City has caused traffic to come to nearly a standstill during the afternoon rush hour.
According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, around 3:45 p.m. Monday Aug. 5, another wreck on I-70 was reported. This incident occurred near mile marker 298, by the Walmart and Cracker Barrel exit.

Eastbound traffic is near a standstill while westbound I-70 traffic is moving as usual at the moment. The sheriff’s office advises drivers to slow down or avoid the area if possible.
According to Kandrive.gov, traffic is moving slowly on the eastbound lanes of I-70.
