PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 62-year-old man from Grants Pass is facing federal charges for allegedly pulling a lever that redirected and derailed a moving train at the Union Pacific Railroad yard in Klamath Falls on August 12, causing an estimated $1 million in damages.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Oregon said that suspect, Craig David Saddler, was trespassing on Union Pacific Railroad property at the time of the derailment. The railway, four railcars and the surrounding property were damaged by the derailment.
“While a train occupied by UPR employees was in motion, Saddler pulled the lever causing the tracks to switch and the train to derail,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. “Saddler fled the railyard, but officers quickly located him less than a mile away. Saddler stated he witnessed the train derail, but denied involvement.”
A witness identified Saddler as the man who pulled the lever. Saddler was arrested and charged with wrecking, derailing, or disabling railroad equipment and vehicles.
