New Orleans council committee members vote for Alla to replace Nyx
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Governmental Affairs and Quality of Life Committee members voted 6-0 to move the Krewe of Alla to now roll on the Wednesday the Krewe of Nyx would have rolled.
Council members will meet again on Thursday, July 25 for a final vote.
“Without Alla moving, there would be no Wednesday,” Councilman JP Morell said. “I say that because it doesn’t make sense resource wise to have a Wednesday with a tiny crew, which Druids currently is a rather small crew. It’s not just the right move as far as allocating resources in a way that observes the necessity and the challenges of our city employees during Mardi Gras.”

It’s a move members in the Krewe of Alla have been pushing for.
“That’s why I’m asking you guys to move us, because it’s crucial to be allowed to shine,” Gina Durand, the 93rd queen of Alla said. “We should be allowed to grow. And it’s hard if we stay where we are.”
Back in May, the Krewe of Nyx had its parade permit taken away following a unanimous city council vote.
Nyx membership first started to drop after a controversy sparked back in 2020 when Nyx Captain Julie Lea posted on social media “All Lives Matter” at a time when “Black Lives Matter” protests were at their peak following the killing of George Floyd.
Then, just this year, the krewe was caught breaking the “no advertising rule” and failed to meet the marching band requirement.
With changes in sight, Alla Captain Adam Strickland says it’ll bring new energy to Wednesday and free up a bit of Friday.
“We feel like it’s a win-win for everyone involved. We’ve had some very late nights on Friday. That means all the city personnel that make Mardi Gras happen, and APD and we have teams, sanitation. They don’t get home till we go home. we feel like moving to Wednesday night, now that spot’s open, will take a little bit of pressure off of Friday night.”
