New Orleans Police Department welcomes Recruit Class 203
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department has launched Recuit Class 203.
On Monday, Aug. 26, 26 individuals began training to become members of the NOPD during an event at the department and Education Academy.
According to NOPD officials, Class 203 will be the third class to begin training in 2024, adding to the 35 recruits to graduate from the academy this year.

The class is made up of nine New Orleans residents, 18 Louisiana residents as well as residents from Alabama, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas, with three having a military background and others being multilingual in Spanish and Vietnamese.
“Your varied backgrounds and experiences will be a tremendous asset to this department and the communities we serve as New Orleans is a cultural gumbo,” Deputy Superintendent Lawrence Dupree told the recruits.
Director of Public Safety and Homeland Security for the City of New Orleans John Thomas told recruits that they are joining at an exciting time as crime reduction rates are being recognized locally and nationally.
“Each of you will play a role in keeping us on this trajectory and ensuring that every resident and visitor feels safe,” Thomas said.
The recruits will face 26 weeks of instruction and training to learn how to serve and protect as officers and how to be a part of the community.

NOPD officials add that the recruits will assist the department with the upcoming major events including the Super Bowl in 2025 and Mardi Gras.
“We need you to be prepared for the reality of what it means to protect and serve the citizens of New Orleans. The training will push you, shape you, and give you the tools and skills necessary to do your job effectively.
He encouraged the recruits to stay focused, stay committed and to give it you best everyday.
