Osheaga 2024 Day 2 recap: Green Day gives fans a throwback, Chappell Roan brings her 'Pink Pony Club' to Montreal

Osheaga has been off to a successful start, despite high temperatures surging through Montreal. Parc Jean-Drapeau was lit up on Friday, with Day One headliner Noah Kahan delivering a captivating performance that had many fans throwing their hands in the air and singing along to his campfire-style tunes.

For the second day of Canada's biggest music festival, attendees have been swarming the site in hordes of pink-toned outfits, many topped with matching cowboy hats and glittering accessories. It's no doubt a large number of festivalgoers have been excited for one of pop's biggest names at the moment — Chappell Roan. Once getting past security, several attendees rushed through the festival grounds to get to the stage where the 26-year-old hitmaker performed from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. E.T.

Later in the evening, fans packed the main stage areas for artists like Canadian artist TALK, "Mean Girls" star Reneé Rapp and alt-rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. But it was the Day Two headliners, punk rock legends Green Day, who had many people packing in shoulder-to-shoulder.

Green Day throws it back, marks album anniversaries

Many long-time Green Day fans were able to call Day Two of Osheaga a success, after the punk rock band showed just why they're legends of the 1990s and 2000s. The Rodeo, Calif.-formed band took to the stage with some of their greatest hits over the course of the night, playing fan-favourite tracks like "American Idiot," "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," as well as tracks from their latest album, "Saviors," which they're currently touring.

It was a show full of throwbacks for numerous festivalgoers, where group leader Billie Joe Armstrong mentioned it was the 30th anniversary of 1994 album "Dookie" and the 20th anniversary of 2004 record "American Idiot." It was made even more clear when they asked to bring a front-row fan on stage, letting an enthusiastic woman climb a ladder to eagerly help sing "Know Your Enemy" with the 52-year-old frontman.

Over the course of their two-hour set, Green Day brought out the best in their fans. From engaging the audience by getting them to throw their hands in the air every few songs, to helping light up the night sky with hundreds of cellphone flashlights, it's clear many fans left asking for more.

Chappell Roan's 'Pink Pony Club' rocks out amid high heat

Ahead of Chappell Roan's performance at the Bell River Stage, crowds of people poured into the area in hopes of snagging a close enough spot to catch a good glimpse of the pop princess. The 26-year-old Missouri-born artist, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, has been on a meteoric rise to success — and fans were in for a treat at Osheaga on Saturday.

But the star's 45-minute performance didn't come without challenges for the audience. Before her set even began, there were several times large numbers of people signalled medical personnel and security in calls for help; using their hands and pointing towards spots within the crowd, the Montreal heat was too much of a burden for numerous attendees.

Still, Roan brought out a performance that proves she's one of music's next big acts — and fans were loving every minute of her set. Cheers erupted amongst the hundreds of people watching her take the stage, walking out wearing a pink rhinestoned corset and a tulle skirt, along with large pink fairy wings and a matching head pieces.

Roan kicked off her set with "Femininomenon," the first track off of her critically acclaimed 2023 debut album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess." Throughout the show, fans showed off their devotion to the artist, singing along to every lyric and even performing the viral dance to her song, "Hot to Go!" Roan even showed an equal amount of love back to her fans, sprinkling in tidbits of French

within her performance. "Je m'appelle Chappell Roan," she said multiple times, garnering many laughs and bright smiles.

Lines for food, water refills grow to massive lengths

While Day One of Osheaga saw lengthy lines for water refill stations, it seemed the festival's second day only grew to the point where nearly every vendor had dozens of attendees hoping to grab a bite to eat. In every part of the festival grounds, stalls selling anything from pizza and gyros to banh mi and ceviche had queues that snaked around obstacles.

It's not that there's a lack of food options — there are stands for almost any cuisine you can think of. Looking for a simple bite like a hotdog or hamburger? You can find it. What about something exciting like a General Tao poutine or a BeaverTail? Those are just around the corner.

But with more attendees hoping to catch internationally-acclaimed acts like Chappell Roan, Green Day, T-Pain, Labrinth and Martin Garrix, amongst others, it's no doubt there will be at least some lineups for necessities like food, water and bathrooms.

Reneé Rapp shows she's a vocal powerhouse

Reneé Rapp brought out her carefree energy to Osheaga's main stage on Saturday, belting out tunes like "Talk Too Much" and "Poison Poison" during her one-hour long set. The 24-year-old singer, known for starring in "Mean Girls" and "The Sex Lives of College Girls," showed she's a force to be reckoned with when it comes to music.

The North Carolina-born artist mixed her set with punk-like dance tunes and cry-worthy ballads; she played with a bit of comedy, too, slyly asking the audience to be louder than the show she performed at a day prior at Chicago's Lollapalooza — "not that it's a competition," she added.

It wasn't until the end where she proved she's a powerhouse vocalist, showing off her skills on "Snow Angel," the title track of her 2023 debut album. She wrapped her set with a bit of a common joke: "[Canadians] are much more nicer and much more sane than Americans."
