Over 10,000 gallons of untreated sewage spill after force main break, Fort Walton Beach officials say

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (WKRG) — City officials said that over 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled over after a break in a force main on Saturday.

According to a press release, officials with the City of Fort Walton Beach responded to Lakeview Road NW after receiving a call at around 6:10 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, regarding a ruptured 12-inch cast-iron forcemain.

When officials arrived, they worked to stop the flow of wastewater to the force main. The flow was stopped by 10 p.m. and the line was repaired at midnight on July 7, the release said.

Although the flow was stopped, the break resulted in 10,600 gallons of untreated wastewater spilling over. Officials say “9,000 gallons ultimately entered the surface waters of Bass Lake.”

The Okaloosa Department of Health issued a health and swim advisory for Bass Lake and the connecting Dons Bayou and Choctawhatchee Bay, following the spill.
