Overnight attempted car theft in Slidell leaves one suspect dead, two teens arrested

SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) — Slidell police are investigating an early morning shooting on Saturday, Aug. 24, that left one suspect dead, two teens arrested and one suspect on the run.

According to the Slidell Police Department, officers received a call around 1 a.m. of a suspicious person allegedly breaking into a vehicle in the 1300 block of Town Center Parkway.

Investigators say as officers arrived at the scene, a second call was received of gunshots fired nearby from a black SUV at 1640 Town Center Parkway. Officers at the scene located a black Cadillac Escalade turning onto Old Spanish Trail from Town Center Parkway.

SPD officials say officers attempted to stop the SUV, but the car began to flee. Officers chased the vehicle to New Orleans, that is when three male suspects left the car and fled on foot.

Officers were able to locate and detain two of the male suspects, 17-year-old Johvon Victor and 17-year-old Emon Starks. Starks was allegedly carrying a gun that was reported as stolen. The third suspect was not caught.

According to investigators, other officers went to clear the black SUV when they discovered one person dead with a gunshot wound.

Investigators determined that Victor, Starks and two other suspects allegedly went to the Slidell area to steal cars. Investigators say the suspects allegedly attempted to steal a car when the owner of the car exchanged gunfire with them, hitting one of the suspects.

Slidell police say that is when the suspects fled the scene in the SUV.

Victor is being charged with illegal carrying of weapons, simple burglary and aggravated flight from an officer.

Starks is being charged with illegal carrying of weapons, simple burglary and aggravated flight from an officer and possession of a stolen firearm.

Both Victor and Starks also face pending murder and attempted murder charges.

The identity and location of the third suspect is unknown.

The investigation is ongoing.
