Who owns the PowerGuard boxes outside some Wilmington area homes? | MyReporter
If you live in the Wilmington area, you may have seen one.
It’s a light gray metal box — likely with a bit of rust due to the humidity and rain the area experiences. The box is easily recognizable thanks to the large red and black PowerGuard logo, and they are located outside area homes with many being in their location for more than a decade.
But what is it for, and who owns it?
That’s what one StarNews reader wanted to find out, and we’ve got the scoop.
Who owns these boxes?
As it turns out, these PowerGuard boxes are owned and maintained by Spectrum, a division of Charter Communications Inc., which provides cable TV and internet service to residents across the state. The PowerGuard boxes were installed by Time Warner Cable before it was acquired by Spectrum in 2016.
What do they do?
According to Scott Pryzwansky, senior director of field communications at Charter Communications, the PowerGuard boxes are from a previous supplier.
“Like all of our power supply units, these provide power so that we can provide our products and services to customers,” Pryzwansky explained in an email. “We are in the process of identifying these units in the field and replacing them if necessary.”
Do they still work?
While the company is identifying and checking the boxes, Pryzwansky said they were still considered operational. He noted if someone does have one of the old boxes, they may contact Spectrum, and a crew member will come and evaluate the box to determine if a replacement is needed.
Spectrum’s customer service department can be reached at 833-949-0036.
