Parsons School District launching free meals for all students under new program
PARSONS, Kan. — The Parsons School District qualifies for a sweeping lunch program that includes every student at school.
USD 503 now has the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) designation. In other words, they can offer a free breakfast and lunch to every student regardless of income. There’s an extensive application process through federal and state authorities to prove they have at least 25 percent enrollment who qualify under free and reduced guidelines.
School leaders said this helps get rid of any stigma that comes with individuals using the free and reduced meals and helps family finances.
“You go to the grocery store, and you know how much the bill has gone up, and so I feel like that, it’s just a service that we can offer to our families that relieves a little pressure off mom or dad or whoever it is who’s paying the bills. And it also makes sure that every kid gets fed,” said Lori Ray, Parsons USD 503 Supt.
The program starts with the fall semester and can last up to five years, as long as the district maintains eligibility.
