Based off of Rick Riordan's book The Lightning Thief, the show follows titular character Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), a young demigod who has been accused of stealing Greek god Zeus' lightning bolt.

Accompanied by his friends Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri), he must retrieve the bolt and prevent a war breaking out amongst the gods. Lance Reddick, Megan Mullally, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Toby Stephens also star.

Set to premiere on December 20, the new series is currently sitting on 96% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes after 25 reviews at the time of writing.

Critics have praised the shows' faithful adaption of the original source material compared to the prior movie adaptions, as well as highlighting the performances of Scobell, Jeffries and Simhadri.

Here's what reviewers have been saying:

Variety

"The series depicts a genuinely inclusive world, showcasing storylines and characters that will captivate fans for the next decade. At long last, Riordan's work has been given the extensive visual adaptation it deserves."

ScreenRant

"The relationship between Percy, Annabelle, and Grover is lovely; they're the heart of the show and their dynamic is central to the overarching story, which builds upon themes of trust, belonging, and friendship.

"If there's any reason to watch season 1, it's for them, and the way in which the adaptation smartly takes things one step at a time without ever feeling dull."

AV Club

"Uncle Rick has worked hard to give us something that adheres to the spirit of his original works, something fast-paced and bonkers (in the best possible way) and thoroughly entertaining."

IGN

"One thing that is clear in all of that talking, though, is the natural charisma and likability of Scobell, Simhadri, and Jeffries.

"It's not necessarily in the quality of their acting – much of the time, more serious moments can feel stiff and unconvincing. It's when they get to act like kids that they, and the show, shine. They come across as genuine preteens."

Collider

"For the first time, the lightning in a bottle that was the simple yet sturdy series of books has actually been captured on screen."

The first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiere on Disney+ on December 20, with further episodes released weekly.
