Man dies after being shot by police in Orchard Park
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — One male is dead after they were shot by police in Orchard Park late Friday night, according to the Orchard Park Police Department.
Police said they responded to a 911 call in the area of Hawthorne Drive and Poplar Avenue around 8:50 p.m. Friday in regards to a “confrontation.” Police confirmed that the man, who they had interacted with before, was armed with a knife.
Police said the man, who was not identified, did not comply with orders to drop the weapon and then “advanced” towards two officers while carrying a knife and was shot. Officers provided first aid on scene.
Neither of the officers involved were identified, but Orchard Park Police Chief Patrick Fitzgerald said they have both been placed on administrative leave. The knife was recovered from the scene.
Police did say that the New York State Attorney General’s Office is working with them, as they do on all fatal police shootings. The identities of the officers as well as the man who was shot are expected to be released in the coming days.
