Phone scam claims to be with Tangipahoa Parish law enforcement
AMITE, La. (WGNO) — A phone scam of a person claiming to be with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender “department” was reported on July 19.
According to the TPSO, the caller states they are a deputy with the Sheriff’s office, even going so far as to use the name of a real TPSO employee and claims that there is a warrant out for the arrest of the person being called. The caller claims that the warrants will be cleared if the “offender” pays a certain amount of money.
The TPSO reports that it does not call people to “clear” warrants and adds that fines handed out by the sheriff’s office are not collected over the phone.
If you receive a call claiming to be from the TPSO and are unsure of its legitimacy, the best practice is to hang up and call the sheriff office’s phone number directly at 985-748-3334 or 985-748-3328.
The TPSO asks that the public shares this information to help prevent others from becoming victims of the scam calls.
