PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Officials with the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program have published several design options for the $5 to $7.5 billion Interstate 5 Bridge replacement planned for the Oregon-Washington border.
Interstate Bridge Replacement program administrator Greg Johnson unveiled the new designs during an Executive Steering Group meeting on March 5. The images show the multiple bridge types and styles considered for the project’s Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. The designs include single-level, double-level and moveable bridge options.

“The images include one example bridge type for each of the bridge configurations: extradosed bridge for single-level, truss bridge for double-level and girder bridge for a moveable span,” Johnson said. “They do not represent a complete range of bridge types being considered. No decision has been made on the bridge type or configuration at this time.”

More than 100 years old in some parts, the Interstate Bridge is likely to collapse during a major earthquake, experts say. The outdated crossing also fails to meet the region’s modern traffic demands.
Numerous government agencies in Oregon and Washington are working together to complete the bridge replacement project by 2035. No decisions have been made regarding the bridge type or design at this time.
