PITTSBURG, Kan. — The School of Nursing at Pittsburg State University receives a grant to offer more nurse training.

The Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing received a 1.5 million grant for SANE training, provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Through the course of three years, it offers registered nurses across the state Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners or ‘SANE’ courses which focus on pediatrics, adolescents, and adults in the classroom and hands-on with an expert.

Training can also include making connections with a community advocate and local law enforcement in different scenarios.

The grant’s purpose is to recruit and train more nurses in Kansas to be Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, especially in rural parts of the state where there aren’t enough nurses.

“We don’t want them to have to go an hour or maybe two hours away for a SANE exam. So by continuing to offer trainings, helping support these nurses, helping fund equipment at their hospital, that sort of thing, we’re hoping to have more access to things throughout the state,” said Brighid Dawson, SANE Grant Project Coordinator.

This is the third time the school has received the nursing grant since 2018.
