Plane forced to make emergency landing in field near Odessa, Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people suffered minor injuries Monday morning after making an emergency plane landing in a field near a home in Odessa, Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at 8:32 a.m., a two-seat, single-engine aircraft carrying two people left a small Grain Valley airport and started flying east.

Twelve minutes later, at 8:44 a.m., flight logs showed the plane grounded in a grassy area near Highway 131 and Oakwood Drive.

In a statement to FOX4, the FAA claims that the pilot of a single-engine Zenith CH-601 attempted to land on the road and hit a mailbox.

FOX4 Forecast: Cooler for Labor Day

Oakwood Drive residents didn’t imagine hearing a plane crash would be part of their Labor Day plans.

“It’s usually calm. We were really surprised,” Rhonda Daughtery, a neighbor near the crash site said Monday.

“We were sleeping this morning, and my granddaughter was like “what’s that sound?”

Daughtery went on to explain how the surrounding community acted to make sure everything was okay.

“We take care of each other,” she said.

The plane landed in Ashlynn Meyer Huffmaster’s front yard, she was shocked when she heard the landing.

“I heard this really loud noise,” she explained.

“I look out the front window right here and I see a plane and I think well my neighbor doesn’t really fly planes.”

The incident could have been much worse, and Huffmaster says she’s thankful no one was seriously hurt.

“Thankfully everyone was ok,” she said.

“I was just really worried that something really bad happened. My dogs were going crazy, but thankfully it was all okay. It’s good that they landed it right here where there is some open area just a few trees.”

MSHP said the two individuals inside the plane suffered cuts and bruising. MSHP says that these two people were treated by EMS on scene and released.

The cause of the emergency landing is currently under investigation.
