Residents of the Portland Metro area flocked to waterways between July 4-7 as triple digit temperatures cooked the region in a heat wave that spanned much of the West Coast. Hernandez was likely the region’s first reported casualty of the heat wave, though on July 8 the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office reported four suspected heat-related deaths that occurred in the previous four days.

The Bernert Landing boat dock at Willamette Park was busy with recreators cooling off in the river Friday afternoon July 5, when Hernandez reportedly slipped under the water.
