Preliminary investigations revealed that a Chevrolet HHR and a Nissan Altima had both experienced mechanical issues, causing them to pull over in the westbound inside lanes of Truman Road Bridge and Manchester.

According to police, as both cars awaited help, the driver of the Chevy sat inside the car, the driver of the Nissan stood outside the car, and the Nissan’s front seat passenger sat unrestrained in the passenger seat.

While the cars were parked on the side of the road, a Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding westbound on Truman Road hit the rear end of the Nissan. The Nissan then crashed into the Chevy and hit the driver standing outside the car.

KCPD said the driver was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, while the front-seat passenger of the Nissan died at the scene.
