Police shooting at end of pursuit shuts down northbound 15 Freeway at the Cajon Junction
A law enforcement pursuit of a robbery suspect ended with a shooting on the 15 Freeway at the Cajon Junction late Monday, forcing the closure of all but one northbound lane beyond noon on Tuesday, officials said
The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. on the 15 Feeway, north of the 138 Freeway.
The pursuit began a little over an hour earlier in the Hesperia area following a report of an armed robbery at a home, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez.
The chase came to an end with a PIT maneuver before deputies used their vehicles to box the fleeing vehicle in, aerial footage from KCAL showed.
"A lethal force encounter occurred," Rodriguez said.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and hospitalized for treatment, according to the sheriff's department. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
He was identified as 39-year-old Robert Brown, Rodriguez said.
"He will be booked into custody when medically cleared," she said. "Many details of the incident are still under investigation and are not available for release."
No injuries to deputies were reported.
California Highway Patrol officials shut down all northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway at the 138 Freeway as the investigation continued to unfold Monday night. The right-hand lane was reopened shortly before 11:30 p.m., according to CHP logs, but the remainder of the northbound lanes remained shut down during Tuesday morning's commute.
All northbound lanes were reopened about 12:20 p.m., officials said. But traffic remained backed up for miles.
Caltrans warned northbound drivers that "it is best to delay travel" on Tuesday morning, as other routes around the closure were also being heavily impacted by congestion.
"Many are using SR-18 to SR-138 as a detour. As a result there is a jackknifed semi-truck causing backups on this route," according to a Caltrans statement. "There is also a construction project on SR-138."
