Police say west Topeka murder was gang-related
TOPEKA (KSNT) – A murder in an affluent west Topeka neighborhood was gang-related, according to a police report 27 News obtained through the Kansas Open Records Act. The report sheds new light on details surrounding the crime.
The shooting happened at 2:15 a.m. June 21 in the Westboro neighborhood, northeast of 17th and Gage. Brian Wright, 23, was killed in the shooting. A 23-year-old woman, who lives just around the corner from the shooting, was also injured.
Police said the murder and attempted murder were intentional and premeditated, but it’s unknown how the victims were known to the killer. Police believe the shooter was acting on behalf of a gang, according to the report.

The woman who survived the shooting lives just around the corner from where it all unfolded, outside a family’s $300,000 home in the 3100 block of Westover. The rapid round of about two dozen gunshots caused $5,000 in damage to the inside and outside of the home, the police report said. A 1-year-old and 3-year-old live inside. Police initially said the relationship between the killer and the family of four was unknown, but later clarified that the family is “unknown to the victims and the suspects.”
27 News obtained audio from a neighbor’s outdoor camera, which indicated the barrage of rapid gunfire coming from a handgun, followed by a woman crying for help and asking someone for a bottle of water. In addition to the damage to the home, a black car that was riddled with bullets was removed from the scene after the shooting.
Police arrested Dasanee Curry, 18, of Topeka, in connection to the shooting in June. He was arrested for murder in the first degree along with other charges.
