GoFundMe created for woman who died at Tyler bus stop crash

TYLER, Texas (KETK) — The Tyler Police Department said a woman who was hit by a vehicle while at a bus stop on Tuesday has died.

Tyler PD said a pedestrian crash was reported around 3:20 p.m. at a bus stop in the 4500 block of South Broadway avenue in front of the French Quarter Shopping Center and Broadway Square Mall.

Public Information Officer Andy Erbaugh said the vehicle was traveling northbound on Broadway and left the roadway where they reportedly struck a bus stop. The victim, Sandra Abrego, of Tyler was at the bus stop when it was hit.

“What happened yesterday is very unfortunate,” Erbaugh said.

A witness spoke with KETK News and shared how the events unfolded.

“The impact was just so hard, it ended up knocking both of her tennis shoes off,” Taylor Chappelle, a Smoothie King employee, said.

Chappelle said she is heartbroken over what happened and described what she saw.

“The black Silverado [was] trying to pull out of our parking lot area over there by the burn sign, while a white truck was coming down the road,” Chappelle said. “The black Silverado got in front of the white truck, making the white truck swerve to try and get out his way. He stepped on his breaks [and] ended up locking his breaks and lost control.”

Abrego’s family launched a GoFundMe, with with donations going toward her funeral and repatriation to El Salvador, where she wanted to be buried.
