Popular sandwich shop closing in Asheville after 26 years

ASHEVILLE - It's a sad day for sandwich eaters across Asheville.

On July 10, Loretta's Café announced via social media that the downtown eatery at 114 North Lexington Ave., will permanently close on July 26.

Loretta's Café, opened in 1998, has operated for 26 years.

The post reads in part:

"26 years of sandwich worship! It’s time to hang up our aprons for new adventuresThank you for supporting us all these fun years. It was an honor to serve you. We hope you stop by to say goodbyeSandwich worship is never wrong"

The eatery was founded by the restaurant's namesake, Loretta Woolley, who was born and raised in Louisiana, and her husband and high school sweetheart, David, according to the business's website.

According to Citizen Times' past reporting, Loretta's Café operated for many years on Patton Avenue before moving to the more spacious location on North Lexington Avenue.

The restaurant offers soups and salads but is better known for its classic assortment of Reubens, melts and cold sandwiches and specialties like The Heartbreaker ― the bestseller, made with a signature chicken salad and topped with hickory smoked bacon, melted provolone cheese and served on house-baked, light wheat bread.
