Portland breaks temperature record for fifth straight day amid July heat wave

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland officially hit 97 degrees at approximately 1:05 p.m. on Tuesday, marking the fifth day in a row that the city set a new heat record.

Tuesday’s high is expected to hit 103 degrees but could reach 105 in parts of the Portland metro area. In addition to setting a new all-time daily high, KOIN 6 Meteorologist Josh Cozart reports that Portland almost broke the record for the most consecutive 100-degree days ever recorded in the city.

“The record for consecutive 100-degree days was set in 1941 when the temperature warmed above 100 for five days: July 13 through July 17,” Cozart said. “So, Portland is getting dangerously close to that record this week. Thankfully, temperatures are expected to cool by nearly 10 degrees on Wednesday. That will still put Portland highs in the 90s and keep conditions nearly 10 degrees warmer than normal.”
