Portland explosion was likely ‘fireworks taped together,’ DA’s office says

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One of the two explosions that frightened a Northeast Portland community on Aug. 5 was likely caused by “commercial fireworks taped together,” the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office told KOIN 6 News Tuesday.

After reviewing the evidence, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office agreed to charge 62-year-old Stephen Filipelli with one felony count of unlawful possession of a “destructive device” and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, DA’s Office spokesperson Brianna Brown said. Filipelli’s arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday at 2:05 p.m.

“Per the probable cause affidavit, the explosive was believed to be made by using commercial fireworks taped together,” Brown said.

No one was hurt.

KOIN 6 will provide more information on the case when it becomes available.
