Power mostly restored after outage hits 1,200 in Palm Springs
An outage affected 1,218 customers of Southern California Edison in north Palm Springs on Monday as temperatures in the region exceeded 115 degrees.
The outage was first reported at 1:18 p.m. Monday around the Mountain Gate neighborhood at the northern edge of the city. Crews had power restored to all but 68 of the customers by 3 p.m., according to the SoCal Edison website.
The utility that serves much of the central and eastern Coachella Valley, the Imperial Irrigation District, was not reporting any significant outages Monday afternoon. Because of the continuing heat wave, IID extended its "Conserve Alert," asking customers to save energy to prevent outages, until at least Friday.
During such an alert, IID asks people to conserve energy during peak demand hours, 4 to 9 p.m. Recommended steps include setting thermostats no lower than 78 degrees, turning off unnecessary lights, keeping blinds and drapes closed and using floor or ceiling fans.
