Power restored in Algiers after ‘cluster of Mylar balloons’ causes outage

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — More than 1,000 residents in Algiers were briefly without power on Sunday morning.

In a post to the social media platform X, the New Orleans City Council Utilities Committee announced Entergy New Orleans reported that 1,272 customers were impacted by the outage around 8:35 a.m.

According to the committee, the outage was caused by “a cluster of Mylar balloons that came into contact with the power lines.”

An Entergy New Orleans spokesperson told WGNO, “This morning at shortly after 8 a.m., Entergy New Orleans became aware of an outage impacting approximately 1,200 customers in the Algiers area. Entergy crews worked as quickly and safely as possible to restore service — and all customers were restored as of 8:50 a.m. The cause was determined to be Mylar balloons which impacted a power line.”

The outage comes less than a week after Entergy New Orleans reported that a Mylar balloon caused a power outage at a Carrollton water plant, leading to a boil water advisory for the entire East Bank of New Orleans and Algiers Point on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

On Friday, Aug. 9, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans issued a statement noting the organization is looking into the events leading up to the advisory and supporting Entergy in “advocating awareness regarding the dangers of releasing mylar balloons near powerlines.”
