BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — United States President Joe Biden announced he is not seeking re-election for the upcoming election. Louisiana officials have shared their opinions on the announcement.

Biden posted a statement to X, formerly known as Twitter, saying he will not seek re-election but will continue to focus on his duties as President for the remainder of his term.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” wrote Biden.

Biden also announced he would be endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as a Democratic nominee by writing, “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry believes Trump’s policy would correct “failed policies of the Left.”

“It matters not whether President Biden seeks reelection. President Trump is running to correct the failed policies of the Left—championed by every replacement nominee. The decay of the middle class, the rise in inflation, the crime, the violence, the open border…and so much more. Each of these policies have failed our nation and are owned by any replacement Democrat nominee. There is only one team capable of bringing America out of this— Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.”

U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson suggests Biden resigns from office as he is “not fit to serve as President.”

“At this unprecedented juncture in American history, we must be clear about what just happened. The Democrat Party forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election. Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite. The party’s prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration. As second in command and a completely inept border czar, Harris has been a gleeful accomplice — not only in the destruction of American sovereignty, security, and prosperity, but also in the largest political coverup in U.S. history. She has known for as long as anyone of his incapacity to serve. Regardless of the chaos in the current White House, our adversaries around the globe should be reminded that the U.S. Congress, the U.S. military, and the American people are fully prepared and committed to defend our interests both at home and abroad. If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy says Biden’s choice to not seek reelection is overdue.

“I’ve pointed out for two years that President Biden’s mental capacity has been declining. In that time, he’s thrown the country, the economy, and the Democratic party into total disarray. This decision is overdue.”

“President Joe Biden has served our country with selfless dedication and compassion. He is a patriot of the highest order and his service will go down in history as one of the most effective and impactful public servants in our nation’s history. His courage and strength to put country first over personal politics personifies his commitment to democracy. Our country is better and stronger today thanks to Joe Biden. Thank you President Biden. As we move forward towards finding a Democratic nominee I am announcing my public support for Vice President Kamala Harris as our Democratic nominee for President. Vice President Harris has served side by side with President Biden and has the experience to move our country forward and win in November. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to work together to elect our first Black woman as President: it’s time to break that barrier and show young girls everywhere that anything is possible! #TeamKamala”

The Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party Randal Gaines expresses gratitude for Biden’s leadership and supports his endorsement of Harris’ nomination.

“I, and all Louisiana Democrats, would like to thank President Joe Biden for his remarkable leadership. After we win this year’s election, history will remember Joe Biden and his outstanding record of progress for our country, his dedication to American democracy, and as one of the greatest Presidents in the history of America.

“We are confident that Joe Biden’s legacy will inspire his successor to preserve and continue to advance his transformative economic, international, and legislative accomplishments, and that he will employ his experience and vast knowledge to ensure that Vice President Kamala Harris will continue to deliver tremendous leadership for our great nation as our next president.

“Joe Biden’s choice to step aside and endorse Kamala Harris isn’t just a leadership change; it’s a bold statement of our party’s future direction. Kamala Harris is now at the forefront of our battle against the extreme right-wing agenda that threatens our democracy, our rights, and our values — and we will honor Joe Biden’s legacy, and the decision that he has made today, by throwing our full support behind her in beating Donald Trump again this November.

We will reunite, realign, and refocus as a party, and continue to advance forward, stronger and more determined than ever.

Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow shows her support for Republican Party nominees, Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.

“Even though President Biden will not be running, whoever the Democrats nominate will continue his Administration’s failed policies.

Make no mistake, inflation will be persistent, the open border will continue to flood communities across Louisiana with fentanyl and other deadly drugs, domestic energy production will continue to be under a relentless regulatory attack, and our hardworking farmers will continue to have to deal with burdensome rules and requirements that threaten to put them out of business.

The answer is clear: elect President Trump and Senator Vance to the White House and ensure Republican majorities in both houses of Congress.”
