President Biden set to return to Michigan next week with stop in Saginaw
President Joe Biden is headed back to Michigan next week for the second time in two months.
The White House announced on Friday that Biden will be going to Saginaw, presumably on Thursday, to participate in a political event. No other details were made available.
The announcement said Biden would be traveling to Milwaukee on Wednesday and then heading to Michigan for a trip that was expected to last two days.
Biden was last in Michigan on Feb. 1, making his first stop in the battleground political state of his reelection campaign. For that visit, he made a couple of stops in Macomb County, including one at a UAW training hall in Warren, where he touted the union's endorsement.
This latest visit comes in the wake of this Thursday's State of the Union address, during which the president leaned heavily into his reelection campaign and the threat he says is posed by his likely rival, former President Donald Trump. Saginaw is a key bellwether of how Michigan votes in presidential elections and is in an area likely to be fought over by both campaigns.
But Biden could face protesters again, as he did during his last visit. Many progressives and members of Michigan's large Arab American and Muslim communities are demanding that the president call for Israel, a key ally of the U.S., to cease its violent reprisals in Gaza following Hamas' attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7.
Biden won Michigan in 2020, beating Trump by just under 3 percentage points. Trump won Michigan in 2016, beating then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by two-tenths of a percentage point.
Trump was last in the state for a rally in Waterford. Both men handily won their respective primaries in Michigan on Feb. 27.
