Previewing the Cartwright-Bresnahan race for U.S. House
Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District pits an incumbent Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright against a Republican businessman and community philanthropist.
Cartwright, 63, is something of a middle-ground Democrat. His GOP opponent is Rob Bresnahan Jr., the owner of an electrical contracting company.
Matt Cartwright (D)
Cartwright's past two elections were narrow triumphs over Republican Jim Bognet, and he was victorious in 2020 even as President Donald Trump won his district. In Congress, Cartwright is a member of the Committee on Appropriations.
Issues:
In a snub of the left, Cartwright resisted calls to "defund" the police in 2020 and touted bringing millions of dollars to local law enforcement departments.
He’s supported legislation to allow the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general to prosecute oil companies who are overcharging at the gas pump and also passed anti price-gouging legislation.
Rob Bresnahan Jr. (R)
Bresnahan, 34, is a former chairman of the Joint Apprentice Training Committee and trustee for the Health Wellness and Annuity for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 163.
Issues:
On social media, Bresnahan has called for accountability for Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former White House chief medical advisor who oversaw much of the COVID-19 response.
He's a vocal supporter of union labor, which has traditionally been more of a progressive talking point.
