A freshman congressman's reelection bid in Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District is among the races that could determine control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio is looking to secure a second term as Democrats nationally hope to retake the House in 2024. His Republican opponent has some name recognition: 42-year-old state Rep. Rob Mercuri, R-Allegheny.

Chris Deluzio (D)

Deluzio's first race for this office in 2022 was fairly close, as he defeated Jeremy Shaffer of the GOP by 6 percentage points.

Issues:

  • A 39-year-old Iraq War veteran, Deluzio serves on the Committee on Armed Services and Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

  • He has expressed support for new gun control measures.

Rob Mercuri (R)

Mercuri also served in the U.S. military and is a member of the Education, Finance and Government Oversight committees of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Issues:

  • On his website, Mercuri has advocated for stronger measures to secure America's border to crack down on illegal immigration.

  • He's also called for a "peace through strength" approach to world affairs, stating in part that Iran should not be permitted to have nuclear weapons.
