One of the most prominent arch-conservatives in Congress is being contested in Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District.

U.S. Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., is known for his former position as chair of the Freedom Caucus and for his role in efforts to challenge the 2020 election results with other supporters of then-President Donald Trump. Former local television anchor Janelle Stelson is his Democratic opponent after beating a crowded field in her primary.

The Cook Political Report recently changed this district from "likely Republican" to "lean Republican," suggesting that Perry could be facing his biggest threat to date.

Perry, 62, won reelection in 2020 and 2022. He serves on several panels in Washington, D.C.: the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Committee on Oversight and Accountability and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Issues:

  • On a campaign website, Perry calls for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act and for replacing it with a new system that both covers pre-existing conditions and lowers the cost of prescription drugs.

  • He's also advocated for a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution, designed to rein in government spending.

Stelson has characterized Perry as an extremist, citing in part his opposition to giving a medal to police who defended the Capitol during the riots of Jan. 6, 2021.

Issues:

  • Citing her opponent's longevity in office, Stelson has said she supports limiting members of the U.S. House to six terms.

  • Additionally, Stelson pledged to protect abortion rights.
