For an improbable fifth straight election cycle, Arizonans will once again vote for a U.S. senator. This time the race is for the successor to Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., who announced in March she would not seek a second six-year term.

U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., is the only prominent Democrat running from his party. Former TV broadcaster and gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake is running against Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb for the Republican nomination.

Before Sinema bowed out, Arizona faced the prospect of an unprecedented three-way contest. Now, the race figures to be a conventional two-way battle race and one of the more fiercely contested in the country.

The Arizona Republic is closely covering this important race. Here is our most recent coverage:

Ruben Gallego, Democrat

Gallego is a five-term member of Congress representing a district that includes south Phoenix and the southwest Valley. He is a Chicago native who graduated from Harvard University, then served in the Iraq War as a Marine. Gallego has been a reliable vote for the Biden administration’s legislative priorities and was one of the more prominent congressional critics of former President Donald Trump during his term.

Kari Lake, Republican

Lake was a fixture of local television in Phoenix for decades until she quit her job as an anchor to pursue the 2022 governor’s race. She is an Iowa native and graduate of the University of Iowa who started in Arizona television in 1994 handling weather. As a gubernatorial nominee and as a Senate candidate, Lake has been among the staunchest supporters of former President Donald Trump and a fierce critic of President Joe Biden.

Mark Lamb, Republican

Lamb has been the elected sheriff of Pinal County since 2017. He grew up a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and moved around from the Philippines to Argentina and spent much of his childhood in Hawaii. Lamb has been a prominent advocate in conservative circles for stricter border control policies and gun rights. He has been a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump.

Other candidates on the ballot

Three lower-profile candidates will appear on Arizona’s primary ballots in the U.S. Senate race this summer. Elizabeth Reye, trained in neuroscience, is challenging fellow Republicans Kari Lake and Mark Lamb for the GOP nomination as a Reagan-style conservative.

One-time Republican Arturo Hernandez of Yuma, a tribal gaming agent, and Scottsdale resident Michael Norton are vying for the Green Party nomination.

Kyrsten Sinema, current senator

Sinema was elected U.S. senator in 2018 after three terms in the House of Representatives. Facing widespread disapproval from Arizona Democrats, she left the party in 2022 and became an independent. Earlier this year, she opted against vying for a second term. She is a Tucson native with four degrees from Brigham Young and Arizona State universities. She has been a centrist lawmaker critical of Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
