Principal of Willow Ridge elementary says school on track to open despite suspected mold
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The principal of Willow Ridge Elementary School in the Sweet Home Central School District said the school is expected to open Tuesday despite suspected mold in “several classrooms.”
In a letter sent to parents Thursday, Principal Robert Polino and Superintendent of Schools Michael Ginestre said a type of mold and/or fungus was found in several classrooms in the 300 wing of the building. They said it was growing on “some wood surfaces and fabrics.”
Evidence of mold also appeared in another classroom in the 200 wing and a music room.
Cleaning according to state guidelines began immediately in the classrooms impacted, Polino and Ginestre said. Air quality tests were conducted Wednesday night and four additional crews have been called in to clean the building. Testing will continue throughout the weekend.
“It must be noted that while school is starting on Tuesday, Sept. 3, the safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our number one priority,” they said. “If there is even a question that the issue remains, we will not put any person at risk. As school leaders, we have already discussed contingency plans in case we have a setback in our work. However, we are on track to solve the issue and have school open on Tuesday.”
