‘Reckless driving’: APD categorizes video of a car drifting in shopping center
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Video shows a dangerous display in a parking lot along Montgomery Wednesday night. Revving car engines is a familiar sound in the Sierra Vista Shopping Center parking lot near Eubank and Montgomery.
“That would be considered some reckless driving that we saw inside the parking lot where the roadway was wet and we had a group of cars drifting around the parking lot,” said Franchesca Perdue, communications specialist with Albuquerque Police Department.
APD said Montgomery has been a hotspot for street racing but Wednesday night’s activities are also of concern since it happened around 9 p.m. “Really causes concerns because it’s unsafe for anybody who is in the parking lot or maybe driving in the parking lot, we saw that the businesses were still open and operating so it is a cause for concern because it’s a safety issue,” said Perdue.
The security camera that can be seen in the video doesn’t belong to APD. They didn’t know until someone called it in. Officers in the area were asked to be on the lookout for the cars involved but didn’t arrest anyone.
“We need to know about the calls that are happening out there. We need to know about the issues happening out there. The more that we hear about it the more it becomes a hot spot the more we know it’s an issue and we are able to get officers out there to saturate the area or patrol the area,” said Perdue.
APD said it can be difficult to track these groups down since they’re often on the move. That’s why they always encourage people to call right away. “It all comes down to reporting. So that way we can do some proactive enforcement getting out there ahead of the issue so we can patrol it to kind of prevent it from being an issue,” said Perdue.
APD said they continue to conduct street racing operations citywide.
