Republicans Plot Lawsuits to Overturn a Trump Loss. Harris Plans to Fight Back
Republicans are setting the stage for a legal battle for the White House, and the Kamala Harris campaign says they are prepared to fight in court.
As Rolling Stone and American Doom reported exclusively last week, the Georgia State Election Board is working with Trump supporters to author rules that would grant local officials the ability to independently declare irregularities in voting, which could delay the declaration of a winner. Michigan Republicans meanwhile have sued Detroit with claims the city hasn’t hired a sufficient number of GOP poll workers. The North Carolina Republican Party and the Republican National Committee have filed suit alleging that the state election board allowed people to register to vote without fully confirming their identity.
“We believe that every case they’ve filed is a brick in the foundation of an argument that they will make in November to say that the election is rigged,” an anonymous Harris campaign official told NBC News. “That is fundamentally our view of what their litigation is about. That is why we are prepared, we are winning in court, and we will ensure this election is free and fair.”
In a statement to NBC, RNC spokesperson Claire Zunk said, “President Trump’s election integrity effort is dedicated to protecting every legal vote, mitigating threats to the voting process, and securing the election. While Democrats continue their election interference against President Trump and the American people, our operation is confronting their schemes and preparing for November.”
Trump continues to cry voter fraud and set up his supporters to buy into the Big Lie should he lose come November, setting himself up to once again challenge democracy as he did in 2020, resulting in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
But the Harris campaign is readying themselves for that kind of fight. “This is the most prepared that any Democratic campaign has been at this point because we knew this was coming,” a second Harris campaign official told NBC News. “It’s critical to have these people in the states who know the law and the players and have lived through 2020, saw what happened there and learned from it.”
With the polls indicating a close race, it’s a terrifying thought that victory or defeat could be decided not by voters but by local election officials and the courts.
