Rocky Mountain National Park timed entry system in effect

DENVER (KDVR) — Thousands of people are heading to the high country to enjoy Fourth of July festivities.

As of Sunday, June 30, all Rocky Mountain National Park roads, facilities, campgrounds and visitor centers are open.

Visitors from across the nation and world are also exploring a wide range of activities held throughout the town of Estes Park.

“I got bored of the New York lifestyle. I wanted to come somewhere that I could be outdoors,” one tourist told FOX31.

Overcrowding can occur during the summer season. RMNP spokesperson Kyle Patterson told FOX31 the timed entry permit reservation system controls the flow of park visitors. One permit per car is issued.

Many visitors say the system provides a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

“Having less traffic on the trails is super nice,” said Paige, a hiker.

Patterson told FOX31 reservations for August dates will be available July 1 with 40% released before 7 p.m. June 30. Timed entry occurs between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Visitors without a permit are welcome to enter outside reservation windows.

Visitors can learn more about the system and sign up for reservations on the National Park Service website.

Park officials told FOX31 that camping reservations for the Fourth of July holiday weekend are booked. Check online for updates.

Personal fireworks are prohibited in the park and all Front Range public lands.

Hikers should be prepared for snow and ice on higher elevation trails and remain on trails to protect plants and wildlife.
