Ruidoso Downs Race Track works to repair flood damage before 2025

RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. (KRQE) –The Ruidoso Downs Race Track, known for hosting the prestigious All American Futurity, is grappling with severe damage following recent flash flooding. The disaster has forced the event, often dubbed the “Kentucky Derby of Quarter Horse Racing,” to relocate nearly 200 miles away to Albuquerque.

The flooding, exacerbated by the recent South Fork and Salt burn scars, has caused significant destruction, particularly around the backstretch of the track and the jockey house.

General Manager Rick Baugh highlighted the urgency of the repairs, stating, “We were the head gate for everything coming to that racetrack, so we’ve got to get this fixed quickly.”

Efforts to assess and begin repairs are underway, with the track management collaborating closely with state and county officials.

“We’re working with the state and county to decide how everything will be repaired,” Baugh said. However, the total cost and scope of the repairs remain uncertain.

One of the primary concerns is the potential for further damage from additional flash flooding. Baugh said, “Our main concern right now is the river overflowing from more flash flooding, which could make the problem worse.”

With the ground already saturated, there are fears that future winter weather could exacerbate the damage. “We have to meet compaction rates, and with freezing material, you can’t do that,” Baugh said.

Despite the setbacks, some activities at Ruidoso Downs are continuing. Horse sales are still scheduled, providing a much-needed economic boost from tourism.

Baugh remains optimistic about the future, stating, “We’re going to do everything we can to get back up and running. We’re going to race in Ruidoso in 2025.”

Decisions on how repairs will be completed are expected to be finalized on Monday.
