Sangamon Co. Board members call on Sheriff Campbell to resign
SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Two members of the Sangamon County Board are calling on Sheriff Jack Campbell to resign after a former deputy from the Sheriff’s Office shot and killed Sonya Massey earlier this month.
Sangamon Co. Sheriff addresses hiring practices, dispatcher confusion
Board member Tony DelGiorno of District 23 shared a post on social media calling for Campbell’s resignation after Campbell spoke in a community listening session Monday night. Campbell addressed the crowd for the first time since Massey’s death, asking for forgiveness and assuring everyone he will not step down from his position.
“He admitted the failures of his Department and asked for forgiveness,” DelGiorno wrote. “What seemed to be a heartfelt sentiment was ruined by his closing statement refusing to resign. Unfortunately, Sheriff Campbell has lost the confidence of the community to trust that he would and could effect the systemic change necessary in county law enforcement. Therefore, I am calling on Sheriff Campbell to put the community ahead of his personal pride and ambition. For the good of Sangamon County, he must resign.”
Another board member, Marc Ayers of District 12, also shared a statement on social media asking for Campbell to step down.
“Sonya Massey should still be alive,” Ayers wrote. “The community has to heal and come together while we implement bold solutions on the county board that bring transparency and accountability. Trust in our Sheriff has been decimated, and his actions that led to the hiring of former deputy Grayson showed a lack of judgment and character that must be addressed. Sonya Massey’s life mattered and what happened to her can never happen again. I am calling for Sheriff Jack Campbell to resign and I urge my fellow board members to do the same.”
This is a developing story.
