Santa Fe National Forest issues partial camping closure order to ‘prevent further resource damage’

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) issued a camping closure order for Headquarters Well in the Espa?ola Ranger District. The forest said the closure is needed to “prevent further resource damage caused by an increase in unauthorized long-term camping,
vandalism, and trash dumping.”

The order went into effect on June 21, 2024, and will expire on Dec. 31, 2025, unless rescinded.

While the closure order is in place, the SFNF will conduct restoration and rehabilitation work to address resource damage and implement a long-term management plan for the area.

Prohibited activities:

  1. Camping

  2. Being in the area after sundown or before sunrise

  3. Being on any road in the described area after sundown or before sunrise

  4. Being on any trail in the described area after sundown or before sunrise
