Savoy enters final design stage for downtown plaza plan

SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — Plans for a downtown area in Savoy are inching closer to becoming a reality.

After a special meeting earlier this month, developers have a better idea of what will fill the village’s Route 45 corridor near Church and Dunlap. The Downtown Development Group has been conducting public surveys since June on what should fill the five new planned buildings.

After nearly 700 responses, officials shared the results.

People want restaurants and general retail for businesses. Green spaces and biking paths were the popular choices for public areas.

Developers shared sketches and plans to trustees about how to best utilize the area.

“This is pretty much the final design stage now with the developers, and this is not a Savoy project. This is the developer’s project,” said Jan Niccum, Savoy Trustee. “So, even though the village of Savoy for the last several years has been accumulating properties on this block, now it’s going to be a private developer that really is the one that is taking the risk.”

He said his hope is the renders for the project will be “turnkey” within the next four years.
Developers will have until mid-October to come back with final plans.
