School zone cameras throughout New Orleans re-activated
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans has re-activated school zone speed cameras after weeks of delays.
Cameras were originally set to reactivate on Aug. 1 at the beginning of the school year but city officials said new Louisiana legislation, requiring the expansion of school zone eligibility from grades K-7 to K-12, pushed back the date.

The ordinance, signed by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on May 16, 2023, allows the installation of signage, designated crosswalks, stripping and other traffic control devices at all elementary and secondary schools.
During the delay, city officials advised drivers to put safety first and be cautious when driving in school zones throughout the city.

“Considering the safety of the students, significant stakeholders agree that the school zone speed cameras should be turned on within the school zones while we all work towards CEA finalization. Any fines generated in these areas will be held in escrow until all final agreements are in place. The City continues to urge drivers to always operate their vehicles safely and to take extra caution and drive responsibly in school zones,” said city officials.
Cameras were reactivated on Friday, Aug. 23.
