Scrubs star's sitcom cancelled after one season
Scrubs star Donald Faison’s sitcom Extended Family has been cancelled by NBC after just one season.
The series was created by Glee star Mike O’Malley, who served as showrunner and one of the executive producer for the 13-episode run, but now outlets including TVLine have reported that the show won't be returning.
Extended Family followed divorced couple Jim (Two and a Half Men’s Jon Cryer) and Julia (Suits’ Abigail Spencer) who both continue to raise their children in the family home, taking turns as to who is looking after them.

The synopsis reads: "Navigating the waters of divorce and child-sharing gets more complicated for Jim when the owner of his favourite sports team (Faison) enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart."
Also involved in the show were Finn Sweeney (Impeachment: American Crime Story) and Sofia Capanna who played Jim and Julia’s kids Jimmy Jr. and Grace, plus Lenny Clarke (Rescue Me) who played Jim’s father Bobby.
After getting a series order back in September 2022, Extended Family eventually began airing in December.
However, production was disrupted by the writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood last year; the show produced six episodes before the strikes, then continued on the final seven episodes after the strikes ended.

In March, after the finale aired, O’Malley spoke to Deadline about what he thought the chances were of the sitcom getting renewed.
"We’re optimistic about a second season," he said, "but I’ve been around long enough to know that 80 million things could happen between now and then.
"I think our ratings have been good. Everyone in our business knows how hard it is to find stories, write stories, write episodes. The cast is unbelievable. We also have great kids. Everyone knows how hard it is to get a cast that feels like a family and is good at making sitcoms."
Meanwhile, NBC have decided to renew some of their other hit shows, with courtroom comedy Night Court and family sitcom Lopez vs. Lopez both returning for a third season.
Extended Family aired on NBC.
