See the results: Readers voted on who won the presidential debate and shared candid views

It’s been a week since the first and possibly only presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

We asked readers to vote in our poll that closed over the weekend, asking who they thought won and whether the debate swayed their vote.

Scroll to check out the results and read comment from local readers who agreed to fill out our survey.

But, of course, a lot of news has transpired over this time: the Trump-Vance ticket doubled down on the discredited story about Haitians eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio. The Harris-Walz campaign launched a new outreach effort focused on the Latino community. On Sunday, there was an apparent assassination attempt against Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

This poll is unscientific and expresses the sentiment of readers concerning the head-to-head between Harris and Trump.

Who won the Sept. 10 presidential debate?

  • Trump: 30.89%

Comments from the public to question

We received responses more than 300 readers from this poll. Here is a sample of responses below.

Question: Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump faced off in debate hosted by ABC Tuesday night. How did the debate impact your vote for president?

“Kamala Harris did not take Donald Trump’s bait! Her facial expressions were perfect; they reflected what she could have been thinking without using words. A stellar performance!” – Barbara Mueller, Alexander

“I will vote Trump because it was 3 against 1 and Harris never answered any true questions she just tried to bate Trump . No really important question were answered.” – Deborah Fowler, Alexander

“Voting for Harris. It did not change my vote. Wished she talked more about the economy. It is good, people are traveling, gas is low, etc.” – Diane Wilson, Hendersonville

“Kamala Harris is an idiot.  She's been in charge for the last nearly four years. She has bragged about being in the room on all of the big decisions and she has cast a record number of tie breaking votes in the US Senate to the detriment of the American taxpayer.  Hilary Clinton is smarter and classier than she (Kamala) could ever be” – Phillip Marlow, Hendersonville

“The problems are there and they are owned by Harris. No solutions given.  All she did was act like an immature adult and bully President Trump or tried!” – Patricia Sams, Mills River

“It further drove home that Donald Trump is not fit to be President, nor lacks the mental stability to hold a leadership position in government or any other organization.” – Bryan Benson, Asheville
