One dead in Junction City I-70 crash

JUNCTION CITY (KSNT) – Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) troopers are responding to a two-vehicle crash near Junction City Thursday.

KHP Troop C posted to social media around 11:50 a.m. on August 1 of a crash involving a semi-truck and a motorcycle on I-70 in Geary County. The crash is in a part of the highway which has been under ongoing construction work.

At 1:05 p.m., KHP Trooper Ben Gardner reported on social media one person has died in the crash. Identification of the dead will be released once the victim’s family is notified.

Gardner told 27 News the crash was initially reported at 11 a.m. and could be described as a “head-on type of collision.” The individual who died in the crash was a man on a motorcycle. Fort Riley police are also investigating the situation as the man was a member of the nearby military post.

Geary County Emergency Management is warning motorists to avoid the area of I-70 at exit 299 as both east and westbound traffic is being rerouted through Grandview from 299 to 301. This is expected to last for the next few hours while the crash scene is being worked on by emergency responders.

The KHP warns drivers to expect delays at this time. Motorists are encouraged to slow down and be prepared to take alternate routes.
