Sen Wyden: Kamala Harris VP pick should be ‘ready on day 1’

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) sat down with KOIN 6 News on Friday to talk about a variety of topics ahead of what he is calling a “busy election season.”

Why does it feel hotter than previous heat waves?

We asked who he thinks presidential candidate Kamala Harris, whom he’s endorsed, should pick as her vice presidential running mate. Wyden stopped short of naming anyone in particular but said that whoever it is, they ought to “be ready on day one” and “be able to win a state or two” during what he’s predicting will be a “close election.”

Wyden also talked about the urgency of wildfire response as more than a million acres are burning in Oregon, where Gaza peace talks should go from here and his push for digital privacy when it comes to car companies.

Wyden supports legislation to crack down on fentanyl on the border

During his time in the Portland metro area, while Congress takes a break, Wyden also took part in a conference about the local fentanyl crisis.

He is supporting legislation aimed at improving border security to help cut back on the sheer supply of the potentially deadly drug here in the U.S. Specifically, Wyden said drug smugglers exploit a package screening loophole that he and other lawmakers want to close.

“Fentanyl does not know a political party. Fentanyl is something we’re dealing with in red counties, we’re dealing with in blue counties. It’s not asking anybody what their party registration card is,” Wyden said.

The AFL-CIO supports the bill, saying the new rules would crack down on tariff evasion and would reduce unfair trade practices.
