Michigan City's Canterbury Summer Theatre closes its season with A.R. Gurney's ‘Sylvia’

MICHIGAN CITY — Canterbury Summer Theatre closes its season with "Sylvia" from Aug. 4 to 6 at 807 Franklin St.

Written by A. R. Gurney, the play follows Greg and Kate, who have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities.

When Greg brings home a dog he found in the park — or that has found him — bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag, the street-smart mixture of Lab and poodle becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife.

Performances are at 2 p.m. Aug. 4, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6. All times CDT.

Footlight Players presents ‘Gilligan’s Island, the Musical’ from Aug. 5 to 21 at Michigan City theater

MICHIGAN CITY — “Gilligan’s Island, the Musical” opens Aug. 5 and continues through Aug. 21 at Footlight Theater, 1705 Franklin St.

Based on the 1960s television show, the musical follows seven castaways as they search for an escape off the island where they shipwrecked. When they encounter an ancient legend found on hieroglyphs left by a cryptic culture, which leads to questions of what they say and whether they can help get them off the island. Does a mysterious visitor have the answers they need?

“Gilligan’s Island, the Musical” was created by Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of “Gilligan’s Island” the television show, with his son Lloyd. Music and lyrics are by Schwartz’s daughter Hope Juber and her husband, Laurence Juber.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. CDT Aug. 5-6. 12-13 and 19-20 and at 2 p.m. CDT Aug. 7, 14 and 21.

Country musician Gilman performs at The Acorn

THREE OAKS — Billy Gilman performs at 8 p.m. Aug. 5 at The Acorn, 107 Generations Drive.

Gilman burst onto the national stage in 2000 with the hit single “One Voice.” His debut album was certified double platinum in the United States, and he was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the youngest singer to ever reach No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Album charts.

In 2016, Gilman auditioned for season 11 of “The Voice” and finished as runner-up for the season.

South Bend Museum of Art holds carnival-themed family day Aug. 6

SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Museum of Art presents “Family Day: A Carnival For All Ages” from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 at 120 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The event features carnival games, a scavenger hunt studio tour, live demonstrations from SBMA’s classes, and a chance to win South Bend Cubs tickets by participating in a coloring contest and take part in a community mural.

A pop-up exhibition featuring art created during youth summer camps this year will be on view, as well as the “Visualising Innovation” exhibition, which features five floor-to-ceiling murals done by local muralsists.

Food and drink will be for sale at the event. Lighthouse Autism Center will host a sensory-inclusive space.

Sharing Meadows holds 28th annual Leprechaun Hunt

ROLLING PRAIRIE — Sharing Meadows presents its 28th annual Leprechaun Hunt from noon to 6 p.m. CDT Aug. 7 at 6357 N 300 E. LaPorte County Road.

The event features 33 ceramic leprechauns hidden across Sharing Meadows’ 185 acres of land that attendees search for with the opportunity to win up to $1,500.

Other highlights include all-you-care to eat and drink, with some food provided by Munster’s Philippe’s Deli and Catering and Porter’s Leroy’s Hot Stuff; live Irish music throughout the day; hayrides, a moonwalk, boating and fishing; and craft sales from the Villagers of Sharing Meadows.

All proceeds from the day benefit the Share Foundation, a not-for-profit, privately funded organization dedicated to serving the residential, vocational and social needs of adults with intellectual disabilities. Sharing Meadows is the 185-acre community that includes 15 residential houses and a camp for other-abled adults.

Admission is $70-$60; free for ages 13 and younger when accompanied by parent or grandparent.
