Several parishes recovering following Hurricane Francine

LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Hurricane Francine is over, and many are grateful to be alive.

Flying over several parishes affected by storm damage, Gov. Jeff Landry says it could have been much worse without the pre-storm planning and flood damage investments made in Louisiana.

“Understanding the need to have levee protection and hurricane protection in this area. We will continue to being committed to making sure we can speed those projects up,” said Landry.

Louisiana hit by sixth hurricane in five years with Hurricane Francine

In Lafourche Parish, Hurricane Francine’s rains and winds flooded several areas taking some trees down with it. One man says it’s now left him to rebuild again.

“Upset, hurt because we worked for everything we got, and we come back to this. Water all over the place, and seeing the roof messed up and trees down,” said Lafourche Parish resident Ricky Orgeron.

As the flooding continues to subside, others are happy a pole didn’t come crashing down onto their homes. They remember being out of power for days following Ida.

“The power pole that was actually across the highway broke first, and actually pulled the pole that’s down on our side. Today’s concern about the power pole going down is because, last storm we had, when the power pole did come down, it actually pulled a meter off the house,” said Lafourche Parish resident Keith Labat.

Jefferson Parish leaders give update on Francine recovery

With this only being the peak of hurricane season, others, sadly, are unsure whether or not they can withstand another hurricane.

“Louisiana, we’re known for swamp lands. Which, we chose to live here, and I love it here, but to lose things twice in less than five years. No, I’ll pack up and leave,” said Lafourche Parish resident Angie Orgeron.

Senator John Kennedy also spoke, promising that Louisiana will get the money that we deserve from the federal government to help us.
