Sewage floods South Portland elementary school playground

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — 4,000 gallons of sewage flooded a South Portland playground Thursday, authorities said.

According to the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, crews responded to sewage released from a maintenance hole at the Riverdale Grade School playground.

Before the sewage release was stopped, crews said they estimated 4,000 gallons of sewage overflowed into the playground.

The release was stopped within an hour of responding officials said, and the clogged sewer line was cleared out. The cause is still unknown.

The playground is closed to allow the school to clean the site and advisory signs have been placed in the area.

Environmental Services wants to remind the public to be mindful of what they flush and put down the sink, things like wet wipes or grease can cause clogs.
