Shelters help people know the importance of owning a pet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – With Clear the Shelters right around the corner, you may be thinking about adopting a pet.

Nothing compares to the joy of coming home to a loyal companion. The unconditional love of a pet can do more than keep you company. Pets may also help you become more active, decrease stress, improve heart health, and even help with emotional and social skills.

Volunteer Coordinator with the Terre Haute Humane Society, Maggie Wheeler said she has owned animals almost her whole life and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I think we will always have at least one pet whether it’s a dog or a cat. We have both right now. I mean I can’t see not having an animal,” Wheeler said.

Kalene Dean adopted a kitten named Agnus, from the Terre Haute Humane Society a few weeks ago. She also has an Australian Sheppard named Annie, which she adopted from a rescue.
Dean believes that having pets in her home is really important and helps with her day to day tasks.

She also said it’s a great feeling to be able to come home to something you love.

“I feel so much more joyous and excited to go about my day. Excited to get up in the morning that knowing I get to hang out with some of my best friends here. And that I get to work on training and different games and toys. I love seeing them grow it’s like my own kid,” Dean said.

WTWO will broadcast live from the Terre Haute Humane Society this Saturday. Visit this link to see all participating shelters.
