Who shot Trump? FBI ID gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks
At a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania Saturday, chaos erupted when a gunman opened fire, using an AR-15 rifle.
The incident resulted in injuries to several individuals, including former President Donald Trump, who sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his right ear. One rally-goer was killed, and two others are reported to be critically injured.
Who shot Trump?
Early Sunday, the FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
Crooks was registered as a Republican and was in active voting status, according to the database service LexisNexis. He appears to have attended Bethel Park High School, graduating in 2022.
In the statement, the agency stated: "The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at FBI.gov/butler or call 1-800-CALL-FBI."
Earlier, authorities said the man perched on a rooftop about 200 yards away, and details like motive and how they got a rifle near the rally site have not been disclosed.
The shooter was reportedly neutralized by Secret Service. Agents guarding the former president leapt into action to shield Trump from further injury and then whisked him away.
Donald Trump, struck by a bullet that pierced his right ear, received immediate medical attention and is reported to be recovering.
The identities of the other individuals involved in the incident have not been disclosed. One person lost their life due to the gunfire, and two others sustained critical injuries.
